The process of movie making is lengthy and complex requiring the input of different people playing diverse roles. In making a movie, the main unit is tasked with shooting scenes that cover all main characters and are considered to be of extreme significance. The second team works under guidance of the directors of the main unit to make sure there is harmony in the whole process. This stage in movie making takes up an average of 106 days making it shorter than the first stage.

After principal photography which is the second phase in movie making, all shot scenes have to be arranged in an orderly fashion to give a rough overview of a film in its completion. In perfecting the movie, scenes that did not come out well are revised with the input of directors. All actors are put on notice during this stage, they know they can be called in at any time to revise shots.

On completion of shots that need to be edited, a movie enters into post-production. In this third phase a film is stitched together piece by piece while sound is added to it. Sound clarity and visual effects to be incorporated in the film are handled in the third phase of film making. This phase can be considered as the final step before a movie premiers. Distribution of film is a time sensitive affair that requires patience to avoid competing with other films. Waiting up on the perfect timing might result in delaying of a movie premier. This third phase usually takes an average of 301 days before a movie premiers.

When you add up the time taken in each of the phases, the time taken to produce a film is on average 871 days. Judging from how long it takes to make a film making it is safe to say that it takes a long while for a movie to be ready to hit the cinemas. How long a movie is going to take depends on the genre. You have movies that take shorter time to shoot because of the genre while other might take longer if they are more demanding.
